Windscreen Repair
At Wanaka Glass & Collision, we prefer to repair your existing windscreen before replacing it with a new one, usually saving you both time and money.
If you have a windscreen chip, it’s important to get it checked and fixed quickly, as it could crack at any time. Repairing a chip will make your windscreen strong again and restore the stability of the windscreen to help prevent further cracks.

Why repair a windscreen chip?
If you are fully insured it may cost you nothing to have your chip repaired and we can usually handle the claims process for you.
If do not have insurance and are paying for the chip repair fix, it is much cheaper than a full vehicle windscreen replacement which may be required if the chip cracks.
A windscreen chip could turn into a crack at any time, often when you are least expecting it. Even the normal vibrations of the road can cause an accumulation of damage which could turn that little chip into a crack over time.
Sudden shocks or temperature changes can also cause a chip to crack further. For example, if the glass is hot and you turn on the aircon, the cooling effect of the aircon on the heated glass can set off a chip causing it to crack.
We can repair a chip in under an hour whereas a windscreen replacement takes up to 3 hours.
If a windscreen chip is in the driver’s line of vision and is bigger than 15mm your vehicle could fail its Warrant of Fitness check.

This is due to small micro cracks emerging from the initial impact and is through no fault of our expert technician. Windscreen Camera Recalibration
As cars evolve and technology plays a bigger role, more safety features are being integrated onto their windscreens.
One of those safety features is a forward-facing camera mounted on or around the windscreen.
In some cars, this camera works with the safety system to warn you if you’re drifting across lanes, automatically slow down if you’re getting too close to another vehicle and even emergency brake if something or someone is suddenly in your path.
If your vehicle has a camera mounted on the windscreen it may need to be recalibrated after a windscreen replacement. Specialised tools and training are required to be able to recalibrate safety system cameras so it’s critical that you only trust an expert. If the camera is a few millimetres out, it may not function as the manufacturer intended, which could increase the risk of collision.
